Azoria hurried after Razzle, who had erratically run from the hall in despair. He was breathing heavily and cursing at himself when Azoria caught up to him. Azoria breathed deeply. She didn’t want to irritate Razzle, but there must have been some way for her to help build some confidence in him. “Razzle, over two season ago, I lost everyone I’d ever known. Before I met you and Jandar, I didn’t think I could go on. My whole life was torn apart, and I had to figure out what to do next. But now I feel a sense of purpose. We’ll still be here for you no matter what happens.”

Razzle sneered. “Thanks, but you do know that cats only live for about 15 years, right?”

Dumfounded, Azoria felt a sense of urgency sweep through her. “Acha! We need to find a way for you to get out of this mess.”

As she finished her sentence, she spotted a group of red-skinned orcs hastily crossing the street. While she had never seen desert orcs, she figured they were just as malicious as the green ones she’d encountered. Razzle saw them too, then turned to Azoria for affirmation.

“I see them,” she said.

The orcs were too far ahead to notice her. Two orcs were carrying a large wooden post at both ends, with an iron cage hanging from the middle. There was a figure in the cage, but she couldn’t determine what it was. She threw her hoodie over her head and raised her scarf over the lower half of her face like a makeshift mask. Only her eyes were visible.

“This isn’t a good idea,” Razzle said. “Besides, you have no idea who’s in the cage. Maybe they deserve it?”

“I can’t believe this town allows orcs to walk freely. They shouldn’t be allowed anywhere around here.”

“There are thousands of orcs and countless tribes scattered around these parts. We can’t fight every orc.”

“I don’t need to fight every orc, Razzle. I just need to find the ones who killed my dad.”

“Okay, but don’t you think covering your face makes you look more suspicious?”

There was no response. Azoria sped up, jogging well behind the orcs, lightly hunched over and scurrying around objects and pedestrians. The orcs were headed toward the stables. Overcome with a feeling that he was being followed, one of the orcs looked back in Azoria’s direction. Azoria immediately bent down as if tying her boot. Razzle froze, then copied Azoria. The attempt at being discreet looked more like a comedic folly of sorts.

Azoria kept her head down, studying her boot. “Really? There wasn’t anything else you could have done?” she violently whispered, clearly irritated. “I think I preferred you as a cat!”

However, the orcs hardly seemed fazed as they continued their way to the stables at the end of the road. Before the stables sat a half-demolished, abandoned building made of stone and mud. The duo made a beeline for one of the stone walls and sat against it.

“What are we doing, Azoria? I mean, we could have just walked by, and they wouldn’t have cared.
